Coupled Simulation of Vortex Induced Vibration of Slender Structures as Suspension Bridges and Offshore Risers

چکیده
An important eld in computational science and engineering is the simulation of the coupled problem of uid ow interacting with a moving structure. A common notation for this is uid-structure interaction (FSI) problems, which include both aeroelasticity and hydroe-lasticity. Herein we give an overview of results obtained within Fluid-Structure Interaction-Structural Design (FSI-SD) a project that is co-funded under the EC-ESPRIT IV/HPCN Simulation and Design (project number 20111). Our main ambition with the present paper is to disseminate the developed computational framework and give insight into some of the numerical challenges involved in addressing FSI-problems related to slender structures. We show that the improved simulation tool developed herein makes it possible to perform realistic numerical prediction of critical utter speed for wind induced vibrations of aerodynamic bridges and vor-tex induced vibrations of ooshore risers.

Fluid-structure Interaction for Structural Design
An important eld in computational science and engineering is the simulation of the coupled problem of uid ow interacting with a moving structure. A common notation for this is uid-structure interaction (FSI) problems, which include both aeroelasticity and hydroelasticity. Such multi-physics systems have received renewed attention as a result of the increase in length of slender structures e.g. ...
متن کاملInvestigation of vortex-induced vibration phenomenon in verticallong circular slender structure with non-uniform flows
Analyzing the vortex-induced vibration of a slender marine structure withlength to diameter ratio up to 200 is the objective of this study. This slender is free to move in both in-line and cross flow directions and immersed completely in water. Three different types of shear currents pass on it and cause to vibrate slender in different forms. Nowadays, these vibrations are very important for de...
متن کاملOptimization of the TMD Parameters to Suppress the Vertical Vibrations of Suspension Bridges Subjected to Earthquake Excitations
Flexible structures (such as long-span suspension bridges which undergo wind or earthquake excitations) exhibit complex dynamic behavior. Due to high cost of strengthening such structures, as well as the technological advances in recent years, much attention has been given to using innovative means of enhancing structural functionality and safety against natural hazards. Among the methods used ...
متن کاملModular Coupling for Parallel Fluid-Structure Interaction Computations
A parallel CFD code capable of simulating flow within moving boundaries is coupled to a beam element structural dynamics code. The coupled codes are used to simulate fluid-structure interaction for a class of applications involving long and slender structures, e.g., suspension bridges and offshore risers. Due to the difference in size and dimensionality of the 3D CFD problem on one side, and th...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of the Incompressible Laminar Flow Over a Square Cylinder
Simulation of fluid flow over a square cylinder can be performed in order to understand the physics of the flow over bluff bodies. In the current study, incompressible laminar flow over a confined square cylinder, with variable blockage factor has been simulated numerically, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The focus has been on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of the cylinder. Vorticity...
